Secured around the head of the victim, these devices, which were very common in Europe, were tightened by the turning of the screws, until the prickles pierced into the skull bone. Then a further turn of the screw caused the cracking of the skull bone and finally the detachment of the skull cap, so that ones eyes were forced out of their sockets and brain substances came out of ones nostrils.
